Occasionally I receive email as webmaster, and today one dropped into the old inbox from a well known but rarely seen PCC curler, one Fred Spanner. I thought you all would like to hear from him.
Fred Spanner writes to the Potomac Curling Club
Good Curling Folks! Just thought I’d drop you all a note and say hi. I know I haven’t seen too many of you all recently, but just this past weekend I ran across George Shirk, Neil Christenson, Bob Pelletier, and Howard Griffin up in Beantown. They were curling in the 41st Annual Ross Tarlton bonspiel, and for the second year in a row the GNCC swept their rocks in for a first place finish. The friendly competitors, the Ontario Curling Association, finished in second place, although they said something about the Florida stones not being counted yet. This year’s score was Ontario – 441 vs. GNCC – 492. Quite an improvement over last year’s one point squeaker, well done men. Lots of folks asked me about Bob Semerad, who wrote a nice article for the web page last year, and unfortunately he was not feeling up to par and had a spare this year. The guys did well, with two victories on Friday, over Lakefield and Oshawa and a Tie with Leaside and a loss to Niagara Falls on Saturday. Overall they were six stones to the positive. This year nobody went shopping for old tools. The team followed the “new and improved” directions from the hotel to Broomstones which involved a 15 mile detour with plenty of opportunities to stop, so they arrived just a few minutes before their draw and didn’t suffer the late point penalty.
I tried to chat with the Potomac curlers, but both nights they closed out the bar with curlers from Niagara Falls (where Bob learned to curl) and Ennismore, so I missed them. I also heard that Bob learned how to appreciate Scotch at one of these gatherings. Since I was near the head table during the banquet (at TCC), I didn’t even get to talk to them there. Well, maybe next year I’ll catch up to them in Canada, if they can take time out from fishing with the Lakefield and Ennismore lads in time to curl.
By the way, I am hoping to attend the Cherry Blossom Bonspiel in March where I hope to finally meet a few more of you.

PS; I am off to find trophies, and I am looking for the "4th Place GNCC Senior Men's" last seen in the warm Room two years ago and the "Fred Spanner trophy". Anyone seen it? Maybe Tim H or Harvey??

In competition with the BIG Spiel, we have the first MACA event on Saturday Dec. 13.
Disclaimer: This event is the same weekend as the Big Spiel. Both are fun events and both are great ways to support Potomac. If you can't commit to a full weekend of bonspieling, please consider MACA!
