Pizza League (Sunday)
A fun, relaxed, family friendly league with pizza served between the two draws. League coordinators assign individuals, or pairs, onto teams. Ideal for new curlers and experienced curlers. Pizza, from Bella, is available for $3.00 a slice each week.
New in 2025-26: A maximum of one brand new curler will be permitted per team, the first three weeks of the season will include 30 minutes of training at the beginning of both draw times, the game the first week of the season will not count toward league standings, and the maximum number of teams has increased to 20. A brand new curler is someone with less than half a year of experience.)
Pizza League Rules
1. Structure of the league
a. Format of league: Twenty teams playing for 10 weeks across 2 draws per week. Games are up to eight ends with a time limit. Teams are re-defined each half season.
b. Playoffs: After ten weeks the bottom two teams will be eliminated. Qualification for the playoff is by win/loss record. The two teams with two buys automatically qualify for the playoffs.
c. Resolution of ties: A game that is tied after 8 ends (or time limit) will be decided by skips rocks (with sweeping).
d. Submission of scores: The winning skips are responsible for submitting the final result of a game. Skips should submit the result via the website.
e. Starting time for games: Early draw games start promptly at 4:45pm. Late Draw games start promptly at 7:15pm. Teams should be on the ice and ready to throw their first stone by the scheduled starting time. Games will be considered forfeited if a team is not ready to start 15 minutes after the scheduled starting time. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis by the league coordinators in the event of MAJOR traffic issues, but please try to be on time.
f. Ending time for games: Games will be played on a 1 hour 40 minute timer (100 minutes). After 1h 40m, teams may finish the end currently in progress and play one additional end (up to 8 ends total). Time starts at the scheduled start time, even if the game begins late. 100 minutes is reached at 6:25 for early draw and 8:55 for late draw
g. Tiebreakers for playoffs: If more than one team has the same win-loss record, team positions will be based on head-to-head competition results from the regular season.
2. Substitute (spare) players
a. If a spare is required, contact the teams with byes first before using the spare list
b. Who is responsible for finding a sub/spare? It is each player’s responsibility to find a sub if they can’t make a league game. Players should let their skips know that they will not be able to make a given night and who will be substituting for them. Players should confirm with their sub/spare that they will indeed be sparing on what night and for what skip. There is a spares list included in the team roster pdf & there is an email list pizza-spares@g.curldc.org that players should email. The listed spares should be consulted first. If a spare cannot be found, send a message to the club-wide spares list spares@g.curldc.org. Ultimately, it is the skip’s responsibility to field a full team.
c. Where do subs sub? Subs can fill in at the position of the missing player or earlier in the order. (e.g. If the vice is absent, a sub can sub at vice, second, or lead) If the skip is absent a player from the original team must skip and the sub fills in at any other position.
d. What constitutes a forfeit? A team must be able to field a minimum of 2 regular players and 1 sub not to forfeit. If both teams cannot field a full team, both will receive a forfeit (zero points for their record).
e. What if a team shows up with too few people (including subs) to play? Automatic forfeit. If there are any pick-up subs (vs. pre-arranged) – short-handed teams will automatically get priority for them. If the opposing team is full with 4 players – they will lend a player of their choice (so that a friendly game may be played, but it is still a forfeit for the shorthanded team and a win for the full team).
3. Team responsibilities
a. Winning team will sweep the hacks at the conclusion of the match.
b. Opening responsibilities: On a rotating basis, teams will have the responsibility to help with ice prep: clean and cover the hacks, pebble, and nip. Teams should arrive 20 minutes before game time. Note: ice prep procedures can change. Check the website or entrance to the ice shed for updates.
d. Closing responsibilities: On a rotating basis, teams will have the responsibility to perform closing duties. Closing duties are listed at the club and in the membership handbook and include neatening, turning the thermostat down, and locking up (both front and back doors).
4. Pizza
a. Pizza will be ordered for delivery around 6:40pm. Hot pizza: more reason to keep play to a reasonable speed. The cost of pizza is $3.00 a slice. If there is enough money left at the last game of the half season, the pizza will be free.
b. Please bring sufficient CASH to pay for your pizza.
